چکیده

The MEDUSA camera system is a high resolution earth observation instrument designed to operate from a long endurance UAV flying at stratospheric altitudes. Due to the technical constraints imposed on the instrument regarding mass, power and dimensions, the MEDUSA instrument shall experience large temperature variations induced by its varying environment in which it is operated. The induced physical changes of the optical system (lenses and opto-mechanics) imply that the parameters of the geometric camera model of the MEDUSA instrument cannot be assumed to be constant. Generating geometric “correct” images under those circumstances requires a calibration procedure which is able to respond to this dynamic behaviour. This paper presents the calibration strategy for the MEDUSA instrument which is based on a full in-flight self-calibration with block bundle adjustment. A theoretical estimate of the geometrical accuracy of MEDUSA images has been explored. Based on this approach a first sensitivity check to certain temperature variations within the optical system has been addressed. A more detailed study has started making use of a refined image simulator based on the collinearity equations, a camera model and image distortion models. First preliminary results of this approach show the geometric accuracy over the complete image within different temperature windows for a camera model with constant parameters. * Corresponding author.

On the Design of Visual Behaviors for Autonomous Systems

{ We describe a set of visual behaviors developed over the years, in the general context of robot navigation. The rst set of behaviors solve three basic problems in vehicle navigation: obstacle avoidance, docking to a surface and moving along corridors or walls. Another set of visual behaviors were developed for the active stereo head Medusa, with the purpose of tracking objects with arbitrary ...

An Incremental Target-Adapted Strategy for Active Geometric Calibration of Projector-Camera Systems

The calibration of a projector-camera system is an essential step toward accurate 3-D measurement and environment-aware data projection applications, such as augmented reality. In this paper we present a two-stage easy-to-deploy strategy for robust calibration of both intrinsic and extrinsic parameters of a projector. Two key components of the system are the automatic generation of projected li...

A Novel Family of Mathematical Self-calibration Additional Parameters for Airborne Camera Systems

Self-calibration additional parameters (APs) have identified their significant role in photogrammetric calibration and orientation since 1970s. However, the traditional APs might not be adequate for the digital airborne camera calibration. A novel family of mathematical self-calibration APs is presented in this paper. We point out that photogrammetric self-calibration can, to a very large exten...

An inter-comparison of sediment classification methods based on multi-beam echo-sounder backscatter and sediment natural radioactivity data.

This contribution presents sediment classification results derived from different sources of data collected at the Dordtse Kil river, the Netherlands. The first source is a multi-beam echo-sounder (MBES). The second source is measurements taken with a gamma-ray scintillation detector, i.e., the Multi-Element Detection System for Underwater Sediment Activity (Medusa), towed over the sediments an...

Underwater Vehicle Motion Parameters Estimation Simulation and Experiment Based on Monocular Vision and Low Cost Inertial Measurement Unit

In this paper, authors proposed a practical motion estimation strategy to obtain the single static object position and the vehicle’s motion parameters simultaneously by utilizing camera and IMU (Inertial Measurement Unit), and tried several classic nonlinear parameters estimation methods on this problem based on the Matlab simulation. A lot of preliminary calibration experiments have been done ...
